Overview & Mission

The Dental Department is dedicated to the comprehensive prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders affecting the oral cavity, maxillofacial region, and associated structures. Combining routine care with advanced subspecialties, the department is committed to delivering high-quality, affordable dental care to all patients, with a strong focus on community outreach.

Department History & Legacy

• 1950s: Dental services were initiated by the hospital’s founder, Dr. Moss, beginning with basic extractions and restorative fillings.

• 1971–2004: Mr. Mohan Babru served as the backbone and operational pillar of the department for over three decades until his retirement.

• 1976–Present: The department expanded significantly under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Kreusch (Germany). Through his ongoing annual cleft lip and palate surgical camps and the support of "Friends of Padhar, Germany," modern dental chairs and equipment were introduced (in 1977, 2000, and beyond), laying the foundation for modern dental infrastructure.

Clinical Specialties & Services

1. Core Dental Specialties

• Periodontology: Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum diseases and supporting tooth structures.

• Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics: Root canal treatments (RCT), tooth-colored aesthetic restorations, and surgical endodontics.

• Prosthodontics: Complete and partial dentures, dental implants, and maxillofacial prosthetics.

• Pedodontics (Pediatric Dentistry): Complete oral rehabilitation for children, restorative care, and dental procedures under General Anesthesia (GA) for uncooperative children or patients with special needs.

• Oral Medicine & Oncology Screening: Routine screening and biopsy services for pre-malignant red and white oral lesions and oral cancers.

2. Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics

Managed by a dedicated, full-time Orthodontic Specialist:

• Fixed & Removable Appliances: Metal and ceramic (aesthetic) brackets for correcting malaligned teeth.

• Dentofacial Orthopedics: Functional jaw appliances to correct skeletal discrepancies during active growth phases.

• Habit-Breaking Appliances: Intervention for thumb-sucking, tongue-thrusting, and nail-biting.

• Cosmetic Corrections: Space closure, correction of crowded/overlapping teeth, and smile designing.

• Cleft Care & Surgical Orthodontics: Pre- and post-surgical orthodontic appliances for cleft lip/palate rehabilitation and combined orthodontic-surgical management (Orthognathic Surgery).

3. Diagnostic Oral Radiology

• Intraoral Periapical (IOPA) X-ray units

• Orthopantomogram (OPG)

• Lateral Cephalogram imaging

Community Outreach & Subsidized Care

• Regular free dental screening and awareness camps conducted across local schools and rural villages.

• Low-cost, highly subsidized treatment protocols ensuring accessible care for economically vulnerable and underprivileged populations.

Infrastructure & Future Expansion Plans

• Current Setup: Two fully operational, specialized dental operatory chairs with integrated diagnostic radiology units and cross-functional collaboration with Maxillofacial Surgery.

• Upcoming Additions:

  • Installation of an additional modern dental chair in the Outpatient Department (OPD).

  • Acquisition of a Digital Radiovisiography (RVG) system for rapid, low-radiation digital intraoral imaging.

  • Integration of advanced Rotary Endodontic systems for efficient, precision root canal therapy.
