-: DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SURGERY :-

HISTORY

The department has a very illustrious history. The first full-fledged operation theatre was built in 1969, when our first surgeon Dr. A. V. Choudhrie joined us after completing his surgical training in the U.K.

The first commando surgery and the first hip replacement surgery were first performed in 1970. Thoracic surgeries, closed mitral valvotomy, cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries were also being done here on a regular basis.

The department has grown over the years and is now one of the busiest departments in Padhar Hospital. Nearly 1000 surgical procedures are performed every year.

The wide repertoire of surgeries includes emergency operations like intestinal obstruction, duodenal ulcer perforation, cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, surgeries of head injuries as well as of abdominal and chest trauma. As a renowned cancer centre, many oncosurgical procedures are carried out here especially for head and neck cancers, breast, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and genitourinary malignancies.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE

The surgery department of Padhar Hospital is divided into several sections. There are the subsections:

  • general surgery,

  • cancer surgery,

  • urology,

  • laparoscopic surgery,

  • paediatric surgery,

  • neurosurgery and

  • endoscopic surgery.

In each surgery departments we provide a number of different facilities: regarding the surgical treatment of cancer we focus e.g. on head and neck malignancies, esophageal and GI malignancies, breast, soft tissue and endocrine tumors as well as genitourinary malignancies.

In the urologic ward we direct towards urinary stone surgeries, cystoscopy, TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) and PCN (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: removal of stones).

For endoscopic procedures we supply UGI endoscopy (Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy), flexible sigmiodoscopy and colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, DL scopy, endoscopic oesophageal stenting and PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy).

SPECIAL FACILITIES

We are very proud of the plastic surgery facility at Padhar Hospital and the knowledge about plastic surgery procedures we could acquire over the past decades.

In order to enable you to make a well-informed decision about surgical procedures we would like to expose all the different procedures we offer.

We assure that a well trained and experienced surgeon will be at your disposal in order to help to achieve your goals – whether you are considering cosmetic surgery to improve your appearance or re-constructive surgery to correct defects.

All our surgeries are done at subsidized rates as we cater to the rural population. Our surgeons at Padhar Hospital under the stewardship of Dr. Rajiv Choudhrie are competently trained and talented enough, to provide you with the 'Midas' touch you are looking for!

Plastic surgery is concerned with the repair and reconstruction of lost, injured, and deformed body parts as a result of burns, cancer, trauma, and birth defects. Plastic surgery generally does not deal with viscera, but with non-visceral structures, viz. scalp, skull, external ear, face and facial bones, chest wall, abdominal wall, external genitalia and extremities.

Regarding the reconstructive plastic surgery facilities our focus is laid on various subspecialties such as facial surgeries and cancer reconstructions.

With reference to facial plastic surgeries we supply first of all clefts and cranio surgeries. In this manner severely disfigured patients, either due to congenital abnormalities or secondary to trauma can be given a great deal of benefit by craniofacial operations. During fetal growth, when tissues that form the upper lip fail to join together in the middle of the face, a gap occurs in the lip, either one side or both sides known as unilateral or bilateral cleft lip respectively. When the palate fails to join up, a gap is left in the roof of the mouth extending up into the nose, known as cleft palate.

Cleft surgery camps at Padhar began more than 16years ago in collaboration with maxillofacial surgeons from Germany and Switzerland. In 2002, we became a part of Smile Train International and since then, all the cleft surgeries are done free of cost to all patients under this program. Thousands of cleft patients have availed this opportunity from our hospital.

Besides that our surgeons remedy any kind of facial trauma. High velocity injuries can cause multiple permutations and combinations of the various fractures of the facial bones. Sometimes a patient can sustain severe facial fractures with very little soft tissue injury. However, vital structures such as the brain, eyes and airway may be involved. Fixation is done according to the latest AO techniques. Besides that we supply treatment of maxillofacial fractures.

Another main emphasis is put on the post cancer reconstruction. Our reconstructive plastic surgeons, an integral part of the cancer treatment team, attempt to restore form and function following disfiguring surgeries.

Besides that Microsurgery is a subspecialty performed with the aid of a microscope on structures that are barely visible to the naked eye. We do microvascular reconstructions of post oncological (cancer) defects.

We also deal with replantations (reattaching severed parts of the limb). For a successful replantation the preservation of the amputated part is important. The amputated part should be preserved DRY in a clean polyethylene bag. This bag should be immersed in a mixture of ice and cold water. Tubal recanalisations are also done by latest Microvascular techniques.

Additionally to the above mentioned procedures of plastic surgery we equally supply hand surgery and surgical treatment of acute burns and post burns contractures.

Furthermore, the facility of plastic surgery promotes a wide range of aesthetic cosmetic plastic surgeries for improving the appearance. In this context we are able to offer e.g. rhinoplasty (means “nose job”), face lift, abdominoplasty, liposuction, blepharoplasty (removal of wrinkles from the upper and lower eyelids) and breast reduction as well as breast augmentation.
